More often than not, I am meeting with clients who are struggling to express their truths whether to a boss, family member, friend or even to themselves. Feelings of shame and fear show up because they believe they are broken, inadequate and not worthy of love, acceptance and/or approval. This might even be you. I know it was me for a very long time. I was so insecure about everything inside and outside of me. I felt anxious speaking up in meetings and even during group gatherings with friends. I judged every aspect of me. I would become paralyzed with fear at the thought of having to meet new people and they too would “discover who I really am” – a fake, ugly and horrible person.
After some intense healing and growing, I discovered some lies and limiting beliefs I was telling myself about me. I was doing it for so long that it was even so difficult for me to recognize what I was doing to myself. It was through my commitment to my healing, continuous effort and self-love practice, and help of a spiritual life coach that I was able to discover the real me. The real me that was buried.
Much like my clients and probably you, we realized we were taught during our childhood that it wasn’t safe to be us. We were constantly being told we were wrong or bad for being who we were by our teachers, leaders, communities and families and that the things we did were mistakes. We began to pretend to be something we were not. We didn’t feel safe to be who we were and express ourselves fully. So, after years of hiding, playing small and allowing other people’s voices to be louder than our own, we became suffocated by a bigger lie. We were drowning. Drowning in pain, frustration and unhappiness of our heartbreaking relationships, unfulfilling jobs, poverty, and lives un-lived. It was here that we finally discovered the untruths that we were inadequate and fearful to be ourselves.
A louder voice began to sing. The voice of truth, pureness, love and peace. I loved hearing it within me and I love to witness when my clients hear it too. It’s unmistakable and brilliant. And the more you listen and communicate with that voice, you will find yourself and feel the strength to speak your truth, live your heart’s dreams and be who you really are to the world.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our Light, not our Darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. – Marianne Williamson
